Hackintosh 4540s – Mountain Lion update sound problems

Apple issued an update to Mountain Lion 10.8.4 this week which I applied via system update. This left my hackintosh probook 4540s without sound and also removed the battery status indicator from the menu bar.

After a bit of investigation I found this was easily fixed by re-running the Probook installer from the tonymac site. I downloaded the latest version, since there had been several updates since I did my initial install a few weeks ago, and was initially confused because I couldn't find anything in the various options which referenced audio. After several attempts I found that the option to run is the option "OS X Support Kexts -> 4x40s -> Mountain Lion -> 10.8.3". This was not obvious because I'm actually running 10.8.4, but it works and after a reboot the audio / battery indicator is now back and running properly.

    Hi Simon, thanks for the informative write-ups. I've just put El Capitan on a Probook 4540s i3, and it's mostly working. I've still no sound though, and the Probook Installer has been retired, so I'm a little nervous about running any of the available versions. Have you upgraded your 4540s to El Capitan (or Sierra) yet? - thanks Chris

      Hi Chris - I upgraded it to Yosemite using the guide at tonymac (https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-to-install-yosemite-on-hp-laptops-with-clover-uefi.143675/). I had fitted a new hard drive in place to the cd drive so I did a new fresh install and it actually went better than the original install with the sleep function all working and the SD card reader (which used to cause a hard crash on the previous version). Apparently, I should be able to upgrade by using the upgrade options that the store offers but I haven't done that because Yosemite works well and I don't want to risk breaking it!
