Bite to eat

This picture, which I’ve called ‘Macro Photography, A bite to eat’, was taken with my Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro lens in a field quite near my house in Stevenage, Hertfordshire UK. The insect is a soldier beetle which was walking up the stalk of a plant when I took this picture from above looking down into the undergrowth. The actual picture has been swung through 180 degrees; the insect was actually walking up the back of the stalk, but I think the picture looks better framed as it is here.

One advantage of the Pentax K-5 is that you can set the aperture and the shutter speed and let the camera select the correct iso for the exposure required. Using this mode I was able to hand hold this shot and by setting the shutter to fire at 7 frames per second, I could get a few shots in focus and well framed. Because of the fantastic low noise performance of the K5, this shot looks good even at 1000 iso.

This image was actually cropped in Lightroom to give a slightly increased magnification and then post processed. I certainly count this as one of my favorite macro images. Other pictures are on my Flickr photostream.
